The Budget 2009

Who would want to be in Alistair Darling’s shoes for Budget 2009?

With the UK economy declining more quickly than perhaps anywhere else in the world, all business sectors asking for financial help, falling tax revenues and a huge Budget deficit, he faces some very hard choices. Add in the fact that we must have a General Election by June 2010 and his job looks even harder.

Under such circumstances, the Chancellor has to be seen to make some positive moves but not spend the sort of amounts that can be cast as another huge stimulus package. Targeting immediate tax breaks at very discrete sectors and groups while setting out longer term plans to claw back the projected fiscal deficits will probably be the favoured approach.
